Tell us about yourself

My name is Nicola Wood. I am a hair and wig enthusiast and I am looking to change the wig game for good. I want to help sufferers of hair loss look and feel fabulous again. As a hairdresser, I get to make people feel better for a living. It is a lovely job to do, but for women losing their hair, this experience is often a negative one. I know this situation all-too-well, having been diagnosed with cancer myself back in 2016. I want to give something back and I want to improve wig services in the North East. A good wig, combined with good hairdressing knowledge, and a service which understands the client really is life changing. I want to help everyone through my hair loss service.

How have you been affected by breast cancer?

In May 2016, aged 36, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had my treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Newcastle. My whole life was flipped on its head. I lost my future; I lost my business and I lost my hair. My treatment was tough, and I ended up losing some of my hair due to stress. As a woman working in the hair trade, this devasted me. As the diagnosis and treatment continued, I became more exposed to women in a similar situation as myself and I became accustomed to what exactly was on offer for people suffering from hair loss. I started looking into wigs and what was available in the North East and it was at this point that I realised the immediate need for change. Not just in the North East but nationwide. I knew my knowledge of working with hair and related products was of a high standard and this gave me further encouragement to continue my work.

How did you hear about Prevent Breast Cancer?

We are often on the net researching for new great charities to work with. In the past, we have worked alongside charities such as Shine, The Little Princess Trust and Stand Up to Cancer for a campaign for Channel 4. When we found ‘Prevent Breast Cancer’ online we knew that both the work and research that was being done was truly remarkable and something that was very close to home to me.

Throughout my illness, I researched, trained and set up the concept whilst going through the daily battles you experience with both cancer and the harsh treatment. It was a challenging time but it gave me focus, clarity and a true sense of personal investment into what I was beginning to create. It became my sole focus throughout illness and at times I feel this is what got me through it all. I had only one passion and that was to solve this. I wanted to make sure all women and men in my position would face hair loss in a different light, with a completely different service. The rest is history and today the business stands strong. We are growing at an alarming rate. From a one-person start-up to employing 6 people in under a year, we are extremely proud of our achievements so far. The business itself is a forward-thinking hair-loss service. We listen to the needs of our clients and put you at the forefront of every decision that we make. We put our hearts into your hair-loss and it shows in your experience. We opened our doors back in 2018 with one mission. To help as many people look and feel fabulous again. We wanted to create the best possible space with the best services, as we knew that no two hair-loss stories are the same.

What would you say to someone considering wearing a wig?

Not to be afraid! It is so daunting when you have to look for new hair because it’s not something anyone would ever really expect to do. People have an image in their heads of what a wig will look like but wigs and hair systems are often nothing like what you think. They have progressed so far and now are so comfortable and undetectable. There is literally a hair piece out there for everyone, whatever colour, shape or budget you need. Here at the Wonderful Wig Company, we don’t just offer wigs. We offer the emotional support and expert advice that is so vitally needed for someone losing their hair and going through treatment at the same time.
