What is Hospitality Helps?

Launched by The Tim Bacon Foundation, Hospitality Helps will ask restaurateurs, bars, hotels, cafes and other hospitality venues in the north west to support Prevent Breast Cancer in 2024 in any way they can – ranging from a discretionary £1 donation on the bill to proceeds from the sales of dedicated menu items.

Help us change the future of breast cancer. Join the Manchester movement.

We need your help to fund the National Breast Imaging Academy, to address the severe workforce shortages within breast imaging in the UK, to ensure that every woman in the UK has access to the healthcare she needs, when she needs it.

Hospitality Helps will harness the power of the hospitality sector, in pledging not only more mammograms for Greater Manchester, but also more research that will change the future of breast cancer. Join the Manchester movement today.

How does breast cancer impact the hospitality sector?

Around 55,900 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year, making it the most common cancer in the country. Of these, around 55,500 are female, and 10,000 are aged under 50, with 2,400 under 39. With over 289,000 women estimated by NOMIS (a service provided by Office for National Statistics) to be working in the hospitality sector in the north west in the 12 months to September 2023, breast cancer has the potential to impact tens of thousands of hospitality workers in the region.

What impact will Hospitality Helps have in preventing breast cancer?

Prevent Breast Cancer is the only UK charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer and we’re committed to freeing the world from the disease altogether. We’re situated at The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe hospital, which is the only breast cancer prevention centre in the UK, which means we’re right at the front-line in the fight against the disease. This key advantage point has led to recognising severe workforce shortages within breast imaging, at a time when preventative measures and early diagnosis has never been more critical.

Indeed, incidence of breast cancer continue to rise, and it remains the most common cancer in the UK. With GP referrals to breast units doubling in the last ten years, it is the biggest cause of death in women aged between 35 and 49.

Alarmingly, the need for breast imaging is increasing at the same time as there are severe shortages amongst breast imaging staff. This has already led to several breast centres closing nationally, placing even greater pressures on the remaining units.

The National Breast Imaging Academy

The National Breast Imaging Academy will be an extension of The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital and will provide a solution to these workforce shortages by delivering the space and facilities to train a sustainable workforce to support breast services across the country. This cutting-edge building will also allow the additional capacity for research into breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and regionally, will enable an extra 13,000 patients to be seen each year for breast screening.

Why preventing breast cancer is so important?

Sally Dynevor, Prevent Breast Cancer patron

I know first-hand the difference that early detection can make, and to think that women in the future might have to wait for breast screenings because of staff shortages is terrifying.

Rebecca’s Story

I was only 37. My world fell apart. If it wasn’t for the treatments, the research and technologies that identified my breast cancer, it wouldn’t have been treated early and I wouldn’t be here now and be mum to my son.
