What is The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital?

Prevent Breast Cancer is based at The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital and works closely with the staff and researchers based in the building. Prevent Breast Cancer raised £2 million towards the building of The Nightingale Centre – Europe’s first purpose built breast cancer prevention centre. The Nightingale Centre also houses the Family History Clinic, Prevent Breast Cancer Research Unit and many of the clinicians, dietitians and researchers that support our work. The Family History Clinic sees around 2,600 patients a year, and has around 80,000 patients involved in their research studies.

The Nightingale Centre Building

The Nightingale Centre offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to women and men with breast cancer. Opened in July 2007, the building is situated on the University Hospital of South Manchester complex in Wythenshawe.

The Nightingale Centre co-ordinates the NHS breast screening programme for the Greater Manchester area and provides a base for one of the most ambitious breast cancer research programmes in Europe.

The Centre has specially designed consultation, examination, counselling, mammography, radiology, and ultrasound rooms. There are also rooms dedicated to pathology, prosthesis, lymphodema and bone densitometry. As well as this, The Nightingale Centre is the home to many of the Prevent Breast Cancer researchers and provides training facilities aimed at addressing the shortage of breast cancer specialists.

How was the Centre Designed?

The Nightingale Centre was designed following consultation with breast cancer patients and staff. The interior is light and airy, offering a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere for patients. It incorporates a glazed atrium entrance and waiting area with a beautiful stained glass window created by the artist, Martin Donlin. Tranquil ambience features both inside and out, with planted areas of landscaping, two internal courtyards and a tranquillity garden.

Throughout the building room plaques are displayed to thank those who generously sponsored rooms for £25,000+. Our Wall of Dedication is displayed in the atrium and it lists all supporters who donated £1000+ towards the initial build of The Nightingale Centre. Thanks to the numerous donations we received, there is limited space left on our Wall of Dedication, so we now ask for a minimum donation of £10,000 to be listed.
