What’s your connection to Prevent Breast Cancer?

I am the Charity Executive at the Tim Bacon Foundation, the Foundation works with businesses in and around the hospitality industry to raise money, which is subsequently donated to charities that support research into cancer or support those living with cancer.

The Tim Bacon Foundation worked last year to raise money for Prevent Breast Cancer’s Breast Density Research Project and the Foundation donated £100,000. We were extremely happy that we were able to present a cheque to PBC just before the lockdown.

The Tim Bacon Foundation has donated an incredible amount of money to Prevent Breast Cancer, what drew you to our charity?

The biggest draw for us was the projects we were funding. The funding was for two Research Projects into breast density. Breast Density was identified in the 70’s as a key indicator in the likelihood of developing breast cancer but is only now being fully understood. The work we are funding will assist with prediction and early diagnosis, which is the most important element in survival rates and therefore we feel that the money we are donating can make a big impact. We also were drawn to the charities ethos, drive, determination, energy and adaptability making it very easy for the two charities to work well together to get the message out there.

Could you tell us what your role at The Tim Bacon Foundation involves?

I am the Charity Executive at the Tim Bacon Foundation which is a varied role. I look after the charity on a day to day basis reporting into the board of directors.  In the role I look after  all the social media, finance, events, marketing and also the liaison with both our charity partners as well as our corporate partners. I am very lucky as I absolutely love my job and the variety it brings with it.

How has lockdown affected your work?

I have been furloughed and therefore am unfortunately unable to work at the moment, I really miss working. Lockdown, has made it terribly difficult for all charities as all events have been cancelled which means big funding streams are currently on hold.

How have you found volunteering at our Coffee Bar?

As I am furloughed, I reached out to the charities the Tim Bacon Foundation have worked with to see if they needed any volunteering support, so was pleased that Prevent Breast Cancer took up the offer for me to come and help them at their coffee bar.  I am really enjoying it, chatting to all the visitors, nurses, doctors and staff at the Nightingale Centre.  I feel I have a purpose again doing something worthwhile… other than being chief cook, bottle washer and high school teacher at home.

What would you say to anyone thinking of supporting the charity?

Volunteer or even organise your own lockdown fundraiser – your support is invaluable, is much appreciated and it is really needed.
