Prevent Breast Cancer funds high quality research into the prediction and prevention of breast cancer. We are accepting applications for funding.

We are pleased to announce that we are inviting applications for research grants.
The deadline for applications is Friday 28th February 2025 at 5pm.
Due to ongoing commitments to existing research projects and the construction of the National Breast Imaging Academy, we have a sum of £200,000, which would be suitable for small grant applications or pilot studies in the region of £10,000 to £100,000.
Funding decisions will be communicated in May 2025.
About our Funding
Prevent Breast Cancer is dedicated to advancing scientific breakthroughs that save lives. By supporting pioneering research in the prediction, prevention, and early detection of breast cancer, we aim to create a future where no one has to face this disease.
Our grant making seeks to further the prediction, prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. We accept applications from researchers from institutions throughout the UK and institutions based in the UK that are carrying out research internationally. Prevent Breast Cancer is a non-commercial partner of the National Institute of Health Research.
We accept applications from UK-based researchers conducting studies that align with our four research pillars:
- Gene Research
- Screening & Early Detection
- Lifestyle and Environmental Risk Factors
- Preventative Drugs
Applications are reviewed by our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and external referees, with final approval from the Trustees.
- Submit Your Application:
Please read our Application Form Guidelines before starting your application.
After you have submitted your application you will need to send the following supporting documents to info@preventbreastcancer.org.uk The subject line for the email should be the full name of the lead applicant.
- Application Budget
- Lead applicant CV
- Up to four co-applicant CV’s
- Signed letter on headed paper from the lead applicants head of department confirming support
- Signed letter from your Finance Officer confirming that funds will be allocated correctly
- Ethical approval letter, if required
Please make sure you read our Application Guidelines before applying.
Please note it is not possible to save your application once you have started it. We recommend you write your responses in a word processing application and copy and paste them into the application form when you are ready to submit.
Review Process
1 – Internal Review:
- Your application will first be reviewed by a member of our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) who is not involved in your project.
- Applications for less than £10,000 will be reviewed by one SAB member and a decision will be made by the board of trustees.
- Funding requests between £10,000 and £30,000 will be reviewed by three SAB members and a decision will be made by the board of trustees.
- Applications for more than £30,000 will go for external review.
2 – External Review:
- If your application is suitable, it will be sent to two external reviewers who are independent from Prevent Breast Cancer and your institution.
- The reviewers will provide feedback and score your application based on factors like the project’s relevance, feasibility, and potential impact.
3 – Decision by Trustees:
- The reviewers’ feedback is presented to our Board of Trustees.
- The Board makes the final decision on whether to fund your project.
4 – Funding Decision:
- You will be informed of the outcome once the Trustees make their final decision.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications must be a from UK-based researcher. The research can take place outside of the UK but the lead applicants host institution must be UK based.
Applications must be focussed on breast cancer prevention, aligning with one or more of our four research pillars;
- Gene Research
- Screening & Early Detection
- Lifestyle and Environmental Risk Factors
- Preventative Drugs
