Acclaimed writer, Sarah Gristwood, has just released her latest book, Celebrating Women, an inspiring anthology of women’s voices through the ages.
Sarah has generously chosen to support Prevent Breast Cancer through her book, with a portion of the proceeds funding our vital research into breast cancer prevention.
We caught up with Sarah to explore what makes this book so special, and why supporting breast cancer prevention matters so deeply to her.
Celebrating Women is a collection of women’s voices across history, from Jane Austen to Maya Angelou, from pioneers and poets to the everyday heroines who found courage and laughter in the thick of life. It’s a book about strength, yes, but also about happiness, the quiet, unapologetic kind women have so often been told to feel guilty about.
Sarah explained why she wanted the book to support Prevent Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is a disease that touches something deeply personal, our sense of ourselves as women, our bodies, our confidence. It’s rare to meet anyone whose life hasn’t been affected by it, through friends, loved ones, or family. And Prevent Breast Cancer does something remarkable.

Continuing, Sarah described what makes the book so special:
There are familiar names and professional writers in Celebrating Women, including Oprah Winfrey, Jane Austen and Agatha Christie, just as there are chapters on the ‘great things’, falling in love, friendship, faith and family. But some voices speak through life, not literature, and we get to hear them, too.
When women talk, it doesn’t always have to be about wounds or wrongs. We lift each other, we laugh, we dress up, we cook, we share. And we do so without apology. Today’s media culture is saturated with noise about identity, inclusion, anger and erasure–ways in which the world needs to change–and all those arguments have their own validity. But joy, joy that’s shared between women, is just as political. It holds its own weight.
She continued:
Looking back through history, it’s striking how often women were expected to endure in silence, to put everyone else first, to make do, to manage without complaint. And yet, even within those constraints, they found ways to celebrate through humour, friendship, small pleasures, creativity
On a deeper message, she explained how Celebrating Women gathers those voices:
It reminds us that joy isn’t frivolous; it’s a form of strength. The women in these pages didn’t have all the answers; they simply kept going. They cooked, they laughed, they stitched, they sang. They found ways to live fully, even when the world tried to narrow their space.
And maybe that’s what prevention is, too, a kind of quiet defiance. A way of saying, we deserve better than fear.
So yes, wear your pink ribbons with pride. But wear it with joy, too. Because every act of awareness, every conversation, every shared story helps bring closer a world where fewer women have to face this disease at all.
Celebrating Women, edited by Sarah Gristwood, is published by Batsford, and is available for purchase.
This beautiful collection shows us that strength isn’t only about grand gestures, it’s also about laughter, friendship, creativity, and the quiet resilience that has carried women through centuries.
Thanks to Sarah, a portion of the proceeds will support Prevent Breast Cancer’s pioneering research.
