Giving a little really means a lot this Christmas!
As we all know and is widely publicised, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a crippling impact on cancer research projects, most recently highlighted by Cancer Research UK who have had to make further cuts to their research budgets. They revealed that the cuts put tens of thousands of lives in jeopardy with dozens of potentially life-saving projects shelved. To read of the impact of Covid-19 on UK research Click here.
We may only be very small in comparison, but Prevent Breast Cancer plays a very important role in the world of cancer research. The government and many major cancer charities direct just 4% of all their research funding into cancer prevention. We believe our area of research is vastly underfunded and the recent pandemic has set us back years.
Why we need your support now more than ever!
We too rely solely on our fundraising efforts to fund our life-changing research projects, as we receive no government funding towards our research. Earlier this year we alerted you to the fact that the Covid-19 crisis had largely shut down our lab-based research and our clinical projects. Thankfully we have been able to restart many of those existing studies however, it may be several months before we can fund any new research.
Returning to our roots
Unlike many cancer charities, we’re focused on preventing, rather than curing. Promoting early diagnosis, screening and lifestyle changes, we believe we can stop the problem before it starts. And being situated at the only breast cancer prevention centre in the UK, we’re right at the front-line in the fight against the disease. But we need your help.
Thankfully there is some good news from the NHS, as clinical services for women with breast cancer slowly get back to normal. One of the fundamentals to prevent breast cancer is ‘Screening and Early Diagnosis’. This is where Prevent Breast Cancer started over 20 years ago, and this is where we must turn all of our attention now in this crisis.
This Christmas we are asking you to give a little of what you can! We need you to help un-freeze our pipeline of new research so that we can fund more projects and take a step closer to a future free from breast cancer.
