The creation of the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) stands as one of Prevent Breast Cancer’s most significant achievements to date, and much of that progress is thanks to the vision and leadership of our Chief Executive Director, Nikki Barraclough. What began in late 2019 as a bold idea has now become a fully funded national training centre that will open to the public this spring.
In this first of two blogs, Nikki reflects on how the idea took shape, the obstacles faced, and the decisive steps that turned the National Breast Imaging Academy from concept into construction.

In late 2019, a conversation began that would go on to shape some of the most important work Prevent Breast Cancer has undertaken. Like many big ideas, it started simply, with a few conversations between us, Dr Mary Wilson and her team, about a bold possibility: could we build a National Breast Imaging Academy?
At that time, the vision was for a two-storey building designed to tackle a growing and urgent problem, the severe shortage of breast imaging specialists across the UK. These are the experts responsible for taking mammograms and diagnosing breast cancer. Centres were closing due to a lack of trained staff yet demand for services continued to rise.
Could Prevent Breast Cancer help raise the funds to make it happen?
For us, the answer was immediate. Of course, we would say yes.
The challenge and the first step
The figures were daunting. The projected cost for the original Academy was £7.8 million – a sum that felt vast. But the need was undeniable. Without enough trained breast imaging experts, women would face longer waits for diagnosis. And we know all too well what delayed diagnosis can mean: more invasive treatment, poorer outcomes, and lives changed forever.
In March 2020, we received our first major pledge: £100,000. Compared to £7.8 million, it may not sound like much, but in fundraising, the first significant gift is everything. It shows belief and trust, and momentum often follows.

Then everything changed
Barely a week later, the country went into national lockdown. Like so many charities, Prevent Breast Cancer was suddenly fighting for survival. Plans had to pause. Priorities shifted overnight. While the Academy never left our minds, our focus had to be on protecting the charity and navigating an uncertain and frightening time.
As the pandemic continued, one thing became clear: the need for the National Breast Imaging Academy was growing, not shrinking. Workforce data painted a stark picture: many breast imaging professionals were nearing retirement, demand for services continued to rise, and the screening backlog caused by the pandemic was immense. If nothing was done, women would wait longer and delays in diagnosis can cost lives.
Revising the vision
After much thought, the Academy team took a pragmatic step forward. The original £7.8 million plan was no longer realistic. Instead, a revised vision emerged: a one-storey Academy, designed with the flexibility to expand in the future. The new cost: £3.2 million.
From that point on, the Academy became a constant focus for me, in meetings, conversations, and at every event. The journey had truly begun.

In Nikki's next blog, National Breast Imaging Academy: Vision to Reality, she will take you behind the scenes of turning that vision into a reality, detailing how the plans were brought to life, how key partnerships shaped the development of the Academy, and what it has taken to ensure the doors can open to the public this spring.
It's a story of determination, innovation and the practical steps that transformed an urgent national need into a fully-fledged centre ready to make a lasting impact.
