How can you help ‘Build to Beat Breast Cancer’.

We need your support. Prevent Breast Cancer and Manchester Foundation Trust Charity have joined forces to address the nationwide workforce shortages within breast imaging. Our ‘Build to Beat Breast Cancer’ £3.2M capital appeal will fund the brand new National Breast Imaging Academy and save lives.

Mary WilsonAs a Consultant Breast Radiologist for over 30 years, I know first-hand that early detection saves lives. Every day I watch my dedicated colleagues working to help as many patients as possible – sometimes, that means we get to reassure frightened women that they do not have cancer. Sometimes, it means that we have to give the very difficult news that they do, and help them to face all that comes next. It is incredible work and we are privileged to do it – but we can’t do it alone.

We need more radiographers, radiologists and breast clinicians. We need everyone from apprentices to medical students to highly-specialised nurses. And we need you to help us to build the facilities to train them.

We are asking you to join the Build to Beat Breast Cancer Appeal and help us save lives.

Roisin Lawlor It was Boxing Day 2019 when Roisin first realised something wasn’t right.

She hadn’t had any particular symptoms and was just watching TV when she went to scratch an itch. That was when she first felt the lump. The next day she went to her doctor, who referred her to The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Within five days she was at the hospital’s Breast Clinic. She was taken for a scan and then for a biopsy. Just two weeks later was told the devastating news she had breast cancer.

On 30th January, Roisin had an operation to remove the lump, and by June she received the incredible news that all the treatment had worked and the cancer had been treated. In the space of only six months her life was turned upside down and then back again – but it could have been so much worse. Being breast aware and finding that lump saved Roisin’s life, but a diagnosis wouldn’t have been possible without breast services. You can help us to save many more lives by joining the Build to Beat Breast Cancer Appeal.

National Breast Imaging Academy

The National Breast Imaging Academy will be an extension of The Nightingale Centre and Prevent Breast Cancer Research Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, which is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). The build will offer excellent workforce training facilities, additional capacity for breast imaging, and research into breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
