Are you looking to make a difference, gain new skills and make new friends? Maybe you would like to enhance your CV, boost your confidence or gain experience in the charity sector? There are numerous ways for you to do all of that and more as part of the Prevent Breast Cancer volunteer team. Here are just some of the opportunities available:
Help out with basic administration duties for one of our research projects or in the Prevent Breast Cancer Office. Duties may include filing, photocopying and working on the computer. The shifts are flexible to suit your needs and the needs of the charity, during office hours from Monday to Friday.
Bucket Collections and Bag Packing
Volunteer to help out as and when for bucket collections and bag packing or both! Locations could include football grounds, supermarkets and town centres. You’ll need to be able to stand for 2 to 3 hour shifts holding a collection bucket or pack shopping into bags in supermarkets.
Collection Box Volunteer
Volunteer to be responsible for a number of collection boxes in your local area. This involves sourcing a site to place a box (e.g a pub or local shop) and regularly collecting, replacing and returning any full ones to the centre! No money handling is necessary because the collection boxes are brought back to the centre sealed ready for the Prevent Breast Cancer staff to count.
Help in the Coffee Shop at The Nightingale Centre, serving a variety of drinks, sandwiches and confectionery. Some food handling and working with hot water is involved as well as money handling. We provide full training. Our volunteers run in two shifts 09.00 to 13.00 and 13.00 to 16.30. Basic food handling skills are required.
Community Event Volunteers
Volunteer to help out at our community events. This could be helping to greet event attendees or selling raffle tickets or merchandise. We also have events where we need a representative of Prevent Breast Cancer to accept a cheque or say a few words on the charity’s behalf. We provide full training.
Event Publicity Volunteer
Help to distribute posters and flyers to help promote our major events. This involves going into large businesses or your local community and distributing literature. You’ll need the use of a car for this role and be willing to pick the literature up from the centre.
Volunteer to maintain the various gardens we have around The Nightingale centre to improve the experience for patients. The hours can suit your needs and the centre is open from Monday to Friday. Some basic gardening experience is preferred.
Merchandise Stall Holder
Run a stall at an event on our behalf with leaflets and merchandise. You’ll need to have the use of a car and be able to pick up any relevant merchandise from the centre, returning any unused or unsold items afterwards. If you’d like to undertake this role but are unable to set up a stall yourself, please do still contact us as we typically need more than one volunteer at most events.
Our Welcome Desk volunteers help to meet and greet patients and visitors to The Nightingale Centre. The desk operates Monday to Friday 09.00 to 16.00. Our welcome desk volunteers help in shifts either from 09.00 to 13.00 or 13.00 to 16.00. There is also a shop within the welcome desk selling Prevent Breast Cancer merchandise, cards and gifts so some basic arithmetic skills are required.
To become a volunteer you must be 16 years of age and undergo a health screening.
