‘Genesis’ The Play

Prevent Breast Cancer are extremely excited to introduce to you a new project which will bring together the science of our research and how it actually relates to day-to-day living. The play has been brought to life by the wonderful Charlotte Bennett and we are so excited to see it on stage this year!

In order to deliver such a phenomenal project, Charlotte needs to raise vital funds and here at Genesis we want to support her all the way. If you would like to contribute to The Genesis Play, please contact the team at info@preventbreastcancer.org.uk and we will help you with your donation. And here is a little more information about the play including a wonderful video:

GENESIS is a new play about breast cancer prediction and prevention, which highlights the human response to genetic testing for the condition.  This project is about using theatre to tell the stories of the people behind the science.

We spoke to breast cancer patients and their families, scientists, geneticists, nurses and doctors. Their worries, memories, experiences and anecdotes are some of the most incredible stories we have ever encountered and we now want to give them a platform so their voices can be heard.

Written by award-winning playwright Frazer Flintham and produced by Forward Theatre Project – www.forwardtheatreproject.co.uk the play has been developed through a two-year research attachment to Prevent Breast Cancer  a ground-breaking charity based at Wythenshawe Hospital, South Manchester. Prevent Breast Cancer are the only UK charity that focuses solely on researching preventative measures for breast cancer.

The play shines a light on this vital, under-appreciated work and ultimately encourages a better public understanding of the world of cancer prevention. It will also inspire a wide-ranging debate about the complexities of preventative medicine.

HELP US PUT THE PLAY ON STAGE

We are asking for your help to get this play from page to stage. We aim to debut the play this Autumn at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester, Soho Theatre in London and CAST Theatre in Doncaster, as well as touring it to several other north-west venues.

To make this production and our supporting engagement programme possible we need to fundraise a total of £47,000.  We are seeking funding from Arts Council England and a number of private trusts and foundations but need to raise an additional £10,000 towards our total budget through this campaign.

Our engagement programme will include:

  • Educational workshops for young women
  • A photography exhibition of women who have had mastectomies
  • Pre- and post-show discussions with our collaborating scientists and creatives.

The money raised will contribute towards the costs of rehearsing, making, designing, promoting and transporting this production and will enable us to appoint an education coordinator to run workshops with young women which supports them to have healthier relationships with their own bodies.

We think this work is vital. We want these voices to be heard.

Help us give cancer prevention a voice and donate now.

To thank you for your contribution we have some great rewards in place including dinner on us in either London, Manchester or Doncaster and exclusive 1:1 backstage tours round the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden!
