On 9 July, after months of gruelling training and planning, Chris and Gabs set off on their around the world cycling tour in aid of Prevent Breast Cancer! Starting at the Nightingale Centre, their journey is set to span 100,000km, seven continents and seven years.
Both keen cyclists, Chris and Gabs were initially set to start a cycling tour around Southeast Asia in March 2017, but their world was turned upside down when Gabs received a shock breast cancer diagnosis. She’d had no symptoms of cancer and had only booked in for a check-up to discuss breast cancer prevention as there was a history of the disease in her family. But, the breast cancer diagnosis meant the cycling tour was put on hold as Gabs underwent a double mastectomy, lymph node removal, Herceptin injections and six rounds of chemotherapy.
It was during this time that Chris and Gabs decided that, as soon as her treatment was over, they’d get back in the saddle and finally complete their dream cycling tour – this time to raise money for Prevent Breast Cancer, a charity close to their hearts following the support they received during Gabs’ treatment.
Family, friends and supporters gathered at the Nightingale Centre to wave Chris and Gabs goodbye – including ITV Granada News, who took a particular interest in the impressive 110kg of kit that they are carrying between them! Gabs also got the opportunity to say goodbye to James Harvey, the surgeon who treated her during her cancer treatment.
The crowd counted down and cheered Chris and Gabs on as they set off for their first stop in Buxton to meet the mayor, the first part of their ‘Meet the Mayor’ tour in towns across the country as they make their way down to Dover.
We’re all so in awe of Chris and Gabs’ strength, determination and passion for creating a breast cancer-free future and can’t wait to see their adventure unfold. Their trip is entirely self-funded, so every penny that you donate will go straight towards Prevent Breast Cancer.
